Episode 89 Part 2: Scooby-Doo Unleashed with Scooby-Doom
Scooby-Doom of the Nerd Blitz is back to talk about Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed (2004). This is part two of the conversation, covering the second film in the series and much, much more.
While perhaps not a topic you’d expect to hear about on the Idolcast, I think it’s an interesting one. We cover a lot of ground from our annoyance with how modern IP farming twists the original characters into unrecognizable shapes to how much I love a 90s tiki aesthetic. The main connection for me was my love of Sarah Michelle Gellar thanks to Buffy, so I have vivid memories of seeing this in the theaters—as well as going to see the stage play.
Among the topics we discussed was the sitcom Mr. Belvedere:
The episode I was thinking of was Season 2, Episode 25, “Valentine’s Day.”
The episode of Ned & Stacey I was thinking of was Season 2, Episode 10, “Saved By the Belvedere.” (Is there anything more Gen X than that?)
My post on the Josie & The Pussycats film is located here.
We end up talking a lot about the role of critics today and in the past and about the idea of the “vibes” surrounding a movie. It’s something that I’ve been thinking about as we watch Hollywood struggling to connect to audiences. I admit to not seeing a movie because of negative vibes. Because the amount of content we have access to instantaneously is essentially infinite at this point, the offerings at the local theater pale in comparison to what I could dial up on any number of streaming services right now. And with the Internet eliminating distance, do we need local movie critics anymore? (Aside from the On Cinema team, obviously!)
I also stuck in a Penn & Teller reference because I never pass up a chance to talk Penn & Teller. The duo are celebrating 50 years together!
Wings was a staple of late afternoon/early evening TV reruns in my day and starred Tim Daly, Steven Webber, Crystal Bernard, Thomas Hayden Church, Tony Shalhoub, and Amy Yasbeck.
